Staff Attorney – San Carlos, CA

We are the only independent nonprofit law firm in the San Francisco Bay Area exclusively serving the legal needs of survivors of human trafficking, regardless of their age, gender identity,
nationality or type of trafficking. Justice At Last provides free legal representation that emphasizes dignity and is survivor-centered, culturally sensitive, trauma informed, and rightsbased.
Our specialization includes assertion of crime victims’ rights, clearing criminal records, family law, immigration relief and identity theft recovery. While we have an office in San
Francisco and in San Mateo our practice is mobile and we often travel to where the client is already receiving services to ensure they are in a space that feels safe and trusted. For more

The Staff Attorney will provide direct trauma-informed, survivor-driven, client-centered and timely legal services for trafficked persons including:

  • Representation seeking all forms of immigration relief including removal proceedings, advocacy to obtain continued presence and filing t-visa, u-visa, and VAWA applications
  • Advocacy to protect rights as victim witnesses and preparation for criminal trials
  • Advancing parental rights and obtaining child custody and restraining orders
  • Petitioning for records clearance for survivors that were forced to commit crimes during their trafficking
  • Helping conduct legal clinics and community education sessions

Successful candidates must possess:

  • California bar membership
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights
  • Knowledge of criminal, immigration, and civil issues involving trafficking survivors;
  • Bilingual/Bicultural preferred (Fluency in Spanish or a SE Asian language)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Access to a vehicle, insurance and a valid driver’s license, and be available to travel extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay Area

This full-time position is funded for one year and continued employment is contingent on further grant funding. The ideal candidate would be prepared to start in advance of or by March 18,
2019 in order to attend the Freedom Network Conference in Washington, DC, on March 20-22.
